We're focusing on Ethiopia first.
Initially, we are focusing our efforts in Tigray, the northernmost region of Ethiopia. The rural communities in this area are amongst those with the most to gain. According to the World Bank, the lack of handwashing with soap is the biggest problem in "least developed countries" and "developing regions." Rural sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia are most affected. Every area is unique, with specific challenges, opportunities, and stakeholders to consider, which is why our plans focus on one area at a time.
We pride ourselves on taking an integrated approach within each area to actively engage in the governance, identify voids, and establish what the best course of action is to tackle the specific challenges and priorities within a given community. We believe that empowerment should come in the form of an opportunity, not a single handout. We believe in investing in the well-being of the people living in rural Tigray and know they are willing, capable, and deserve a chance to write their own story.
Current challenges to overcome and address the lack of proper handwashing with soap include a lack of soap, water, and handwashing stations as well as bad habits and a lack of proper handwashing education.
Washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrheal disease-associated deaths by 50% and the risk of respiratory infections by 16%. We won't stop until everyone has access to soap and is equipped with the proper handwashing education, because handwashing with soap doesn't just save lives, it means better public health, nutrition, education and equity!
